Trevor: first sickness: strep, first fevers, claps now (finally!), turns off light switches, brushes his hair with his hair brush, likes things on his head now: hats & bunny ears, brings Al's work clothes or general clothes to the couch for him (walks it over by himself), walks everywhere now except when he starts from the middle of the floor with nothing to help him stand up, shuts drawers, he bent over to be on his hands and feet and pushed back up into a standing position, tries to make a piggy noise with his scrunchy nose when asked or when he sees a piggy, follows most any command, caught a ball,
Monday when T woke up from his morning nap at noon, he was really warm. but he's usually pretty warm after his naps so I changed him into thin clothes and we had lunch. he didn't eat anything and when I pulled him out of his high chair he was still really warm. so I took his temp and it was 103.5. I called into the doctor's office, but of course no one was available so they took a message and said a nurse would call me back. while I was waiting for the call back, Al got up and agreed we should take him in but we decided to wait for the call back. again, it took almost an hour to get a call back and the nurse said to bring him in to check his ears just to be safe (again helped me feel better about the fact that it was his teeth but might as well have him checked out). ped's was full for the day so we brought him in to urgent care. luckily there was no one waiting in urgent care and we got right in. the doctor saw nothing in his ears but his throat was a little red. so they swabbed for strep which came back negative.
T's temp at urgent care via forehead was 102.2. he was also 20.2 pounds! finally reached 20 pounds but that was with his clothes on and holding a small toy.....
when the doctor came back, he said we had 2 options: give him Tamiflu in case he had influenza or run a bunch more tests to see if he had a bacterial or viral infection. this again spurred my dislike for doctors and the medical arena we're currently in. really? those are the 2 options? how about treating the fever at home and waiting to see what happens? which is what I suggested to him especially since trevor was in pretty good spirits and I was convinced it was his teeth. the doctors reply: oh yeah, you could do that too. duh. so he gave us a chart for dosages for Tylenol and ibuprofen and suggested we alternate those 2 every 4 hours in an attempt to keep the fever down. he also gave us some pedilyte samples in case we felt like Trevor was getting dehydrated.
al stopped and picked up ibuprofen before track practice and we gave it to Trevor before his afternoon nap. he wouldn't sleep for the nap but by the time an hour was up and I decided to let him not nap, his fever was gone. again, reassuring me it was his teeth since the ibuprofen helped (reducing swelling) whereas the Tylenol didn't seem to.
Trevor was great the rest of the night; we went outside for a bit for some fresh air and to keep him cool. he slept 730p-130a but at 130 he was warm again. so I took off his sleep sack and put on some light pants, gave him ibuprofen and nursed him. he didn't fall asleep and didn't seem like he would, so we sat in the chair in his room for a bit trying to get him to cool down. I tried putting him in his crib, even just to sit in there thinking it would be cooler for him than having my body heat against him, but he didn't like that. so we sat for a bit more, then I walked around with him a bit and laid him in his crib again. he stayed put, so I went to bed and he fell asleep. that was about 230; he woke again at 320 and his fever was broke so I assumed he was cold and that's why he woke up. I put him back in his sleep sack and he was out. he made some noises here and there, but slept until 630a.
Tuesday morning he woke with no fever but also no teeth thru, and played well that morning, even ate a bit better for breakfast although a lot went on the floor. but when I went to nurse him before his nap, he was warm again. I had already changed his diaper so I didn't take his temp but I knew he had a fever. I nursed him, gave him ibuprofen, and put him down. he tossed and turned for a while but fell asleep eventually. I wish I knew when his fevers were coming so I could give him medicine before hand, especially when it's around nap/sleep time as it seems to take him much longer to sleep even when he's tired when he has a fever (i'm sure he's uncomfortable being so warm).
Wednesday Trevor was seeming better; he hadn't had a fever since bedtime Tuesday night. as we were heading out for our after lunch walk I got a call from the urgent care saying Trevor's 2 day strep test came back positive. kinda weird since he didn't have any other symptoms other than fever and a sort of stuffy nose. Al stopped an got his antibiotics (azithromycin) while he was out running errands and we promptly gave him his first dose.
Trevor was just fine afterwards. on Thursday we went to the neighb's outdoor easter egg hunt and Al had testing in woodbury. that evening I was so tired and had a horrible headache that I could not get rid of so Al called in sick to get some rest for us all. I went to bed at about 630 and the next morning my headache was gone.
Friday we all drove up to mom's because Al had testing in Roseville at 830 am on Saturday. After his testing, we left Trevor with grama, while we went to the bogarts annual beer bust with our friends. it was a good time and we stayed later than I thought we would, but got back to mom's about 8. I put trevor to bed and went to bed myself.
sunday we got up early and drove to Wausau for easter with Al's family. the 3 hour drive wasn't bad and it was good to see them all, especially the ones who hadn't met Trevor yet. T did great, was walking around and playing with everyone. Grandpa Peter hid some candy outside for him to find and he had a good time doing that.
